Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 45)

- Posição 2004: your notes. Next?
- Carla Zaccagnini: Museu das Vistas, which means Views Museum. That's a tough one. She sent in her project, that required a desk, a couple of chairs, and a police officer that does spoken portraits. I think the name of it is spoken portraits, when you drescribe a face, and they do this drawing, and then show it to you, and make adjustments, and keep doing it until you say it looks like the face you remember. What she wanted was for the police officer to do drawings of the landscapes around the mansion where the art show was happening, as described by people attending the show. That's a very good idea for a performance. Trouble is, we never heard of her again, so it did not happen. We tried to contact her, but couldn't get an answer. It was very confusing at the time, but today I believe that her work was, in fact, this vanishing act. You know: sometimes people go and do spoken portraits of missing people. And there were we, facing the fact of a missing artist!
- But what if it was just a case of she dropping the idea of being in the show and forgetting to tell you people, and then catching a plane to Paris? What if it was just a communication failure?
- Too late, man! If that's the case, she was part of the show, anyway, in a translucid action with us!
- What is a translucid action?
- That's an action that even the artists involved in might not notice is art until some time later. I don't know about her, but I have just found out about it! Either the vanishing act was her work of art, or she was in this translucid action with us! Wathever was the case, I'm still having fun almost three years down the road! Good show!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 44)

- Posição 2004: your notes. Next?
- Bruno de Carvalho: Untitled. That was a sound sculpture that was drowned by the resounding crowd at the opening night. It was supposed to be sounds of fireguns and explosions. It was a great practical joke installation, but History took over the sound that night, man. And it was on only for the opening night, so it was a bit like those Beatles concerts in which the band could not hear themselves in the middle of the screaming mass. Underneath the shouting wild surface, some great music!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 43)

- Posição 2004: your notes. Next?
- That's bobN, or Bob N, as it is usually mispelled. That's Piscinão do Lage, which means Lage's Big Pool, and is a pun on a suburban public pool here in Rio that goes by the nickname Piscinão de Ramos. As I told you before, he used the pool in the middle of the mansion that houses the art school. The pool was empty for the art show, and he invited different artists to use it each day of the art show. It was kind of a distorted fractal image of the show itself. Very good! He also had this photo portrait of himself and a Barbie doll impersonator. It was called Portrait: Bob & Barbie. The portrait hung from one of the walls of the empty pool, and it was quite a laugh for me. Good show!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 42)

- Posição 2004: your notes. Next?
- Bernardo Pinheiro. He did that lovingly disturbing video-installation I told you about. Strictly for the strong of mind.
- OK. Next?
- Beth Ferrante: Vertigem, which means Vertigo. Not my favorite painting at the show, but I can appreciate her chutzpa, man! It was kind of retro, like back to transvanguarda, you know?
Like 1985, or something! She has guts, man! I like that!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 41)

- Posição 2004: your notes. Next?
- Beatriz Petrus: Da Série Comentários (n. 14), which means From the Commentary series (n. 14). That's two photos of parts of a tennis court as seen from above. I like Mondrian, and Kraftwerk, and I sure did like those photos. That's all I have to say about that.
- OK. Next?
- Bernardo Damasceno: Um Bom Lugar, which means A Good Place. That's the match-made miniature of one of Lage Park's benches I've talked about before. I don't care if people get it or not: this one is fantastic!

jesus fuck (is not dope fiend propaganda)

I hear Prince Harry is not going to the Iraq War. Good! Next, they could go ahead and do something about finding the original 25-minute version of the Beatles singing Helter Skelter till Ringo starts shouting, and also that lost single by Jesus and Mary Chain that the workers at the factory refused to press. It WILL bring us closer to a much better democracy, trust me. Then maybe the Pope will consider doing a hip hop version of Cocaine with Eminem. Yeah, complete with that slow-hand guitar sample, and some favela funk beat! I'm sure My Bloody Valentine will love to be on that one!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 40)

- Posição 2004: your notes.
- OK. Andréa Facchini: Volúpia, which means Voluptuousness. That was a painting tryptic I liked very much. I believe the images were of a mountain of folded colorful fabric. That's what hit me, anyway. I liked her technique, and being a feast for the eyes is quite enough for me.
- OK. Next?
- Anna Braga: Puro Álibi, which means Pure Alibi. I liked her installation, even if I can't say I know what she meant. There were some signs hanging from the trees in the park outside the mansion, as if it were some kind of stark pop prophesy. I vaguely remember a white statue, maybe just the head of a bust, emerging from the bathtub of the mansion, which was full of coal or some other black stuff. I think there was a mirror in front of it. Anyway, it felt quite ominous, and that's good enough for me!
- OK. Next?
- Arjan Martins: painting directly on the wall, untitled. I just love what he does to walls and paper rectangles. This one was probably one of his best stuff ever! He likes to draw bones in this brown-red paint, like its dry blood, or something similar. It can be quite disturbing at times. And for this one, he also stuck a bullet to the wall, and guess what? He found the bullet in his own home! It was a stray bullet that could have actually killed him! Now, he does not pretend to be a hero of any kind, as I see it. I saw him telling the story of how he found it, and he is just an artist that paints and draws what he sees and feels, and this time around he just felt he had to put this piece of metal into the picture. It works for me!
- OK. Next?
- Baby Bittencourt: EAVMaria, which is a contraction of EAV (the name of the visual art school where the show happened), and Ave Maria, which means Holy Mary, the catholic prayer. It was a great place for me to be, her installation. It looked like an improvised chapel, with all seats different from each other. Mostly stools, if I remember it right. And, instead of an altar, this screen that showed a series of photos of herself, dressed as a smiling Holy Mary, under the arches at the entrance of the school. She was floating, friendly, and a true ecumenic blessing! Amen!

Legalise crack

- Why?
- Because I've read it's a quick orgasmic high! That makes it as addictive as the tobacco cigarette, which is a cool combination! You work like nuts for your boss, until you can't take it no more, then you have a quick ten-minute trip on crack, light up your Marlboro, and go back to work without pausing for lunch! You produce more, because you must pay for your two addictions! You are so fucking electric all the time you don't even sleep right, or want sex, so the Government has to produce other slaves like you through genetic engineering! That way we don't have any sex perverts left, 'cause everybody is just too fucking hyped up! So the utopia of a nation of sexless shopping-freak workaholics becomes a reality, in the name of Jesus or whatever! Tell me you can see how great this is!
- Uh -- Sorry! I'm so wired I could not concentrate! I missed everything you said after that orgasmic high stuff!

Vibrators to the people

- Yeah! People need to stick up vibrators up their asses! The human race is always two vibrator-induced anal orgasms under normal, so the United Nations should just give them away for free to every citizen of the planet! That would bring the numbers of violence to a squirming ecstatic downward spiral!
- Do you use vibrators up you ass yourself, sir?
- Just my baby finger, actually! But I'm willing to expand my practical views on the subject!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 39)

- Posição 2004: your notes.
- OK. André Sheik: Janelas, which means Windows. That one was awesome! It was a video on a TV on a pedestal, facing an open window. The images I don't remember, because the best part was the image kept going totally black from time to time, like it was defective, or even turned off! Then the window facing the tube "entered" the picture because it was reflected on its surface, as it got dark! So you had to notice it when the images came back. People were freaked out, man! They were complaining about malfunctioning, or sorry about its supposed misplacement! If being misunderstood is sometimes equal to avant-garde, Sheik was a complete success!
- Oh, so you still believe in the avant-garde?
- It won't die, man! No matter what you or me have to say about it! It just keeps coming back, even if we refuse or are unable to see it! That's why I don't worry and just keep on doing what I like! That's all we can do!

stop the vomit with pot

- What?
- Well, I've heard this guy on TV twenty years ago, saying that marijuana stops you from feeling sick while drinking, so you don't vomit, and you keep drinking, and he was worried about an increase in teenage alcoholism. OK, but he forgot to mention that lots of teenage guys get quite drunk in order not to feel the fear of the first time they fuck someone. And sometimes it just makes them puke all over the person! So, if you want your het daughter or gay bottom son to avoid being puked all over when all they want is some hot cock up their holes, you should legalise marijuana!
- Wow! I'm really hot to drink your piss, now!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 38)

- Posição 2004: the notes.
- Ana Biolchini: Contatos Imidiáticos III, which means Imediatic [sic] Contacts III. I just remember images of feet.I think it was a beatiful pop feet trip of some sort. Anyway, that's how it hit me good!
- OK. Next?
- Ana Holck, whose work I have mentioned before. That great piece of art is called Impedimento #3, which means Impediment #3
- OK. Next?
- Ana Paula Andrade, another one I've mentioned before. The name of it is Glue.
- OK. Next?
- Ana Torres, of the postcards and outdoors I told you about. They were called Janelas, which means Windows.
- OK. Next?
- André Alvim: Obra, which means Work, in the sense of art object or the sum of all works by an artist. I don't remember the details, but it had a Side A and a side B, because he used one of those moving wood walls that people use to lean their paintings against. I don't know the name of it. But I thought it very smart to use it like he did. Like a good idea hidden in front of everyone, and he found it!
- OK. Next?
- André Makarenko: Dois Vídeos, which means Two Videos. As I said before, I had lots of fun watching them a few times, and that's more than enough for me to praise the guy!

the surgeon general gives you

Sound advice when you go to Rio de Janeiro: abuse com moderação. That means ABUSE IT WITH MODERATION. Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 37)

- Posição 2004: back to your notes.
- Amalia Giacomini: Untitled. That's the one with the white elastic grid above the pool. Superb!
- OK. Next?
- Ana Angélica. Janelas: Jacarepaguá. That means Windows: Jacarepaguá, which is a borough in the western part of Rio de Janeiro City. They were beautiful pinhole photos. That's all I remember: the sensation of beauty taking up my heart.

Sprite Zero and organic cachaça

- What is organic cachaça?
- I don't know, man!
- Is it any good?
- Well, I look drunk, don't I? Sure it's good!
- And where are you going?
- Oh, I found this VIP pass at Dama de Ferro, at the end of the after hours techno party, so I am going to this cocktail party.

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 36)

- Did you see this story? The Revista do Globo has run a cover story about Geração 2000, that means Generation 2000! Care to comment?
- Well, some of them were at Posição 2004. And I believe that the Generation 2000 involves people of all ages, if they are tuned in to the free-form spirit of it. Because age is like the support: anything goes!
- Would you care to say something about the artists featured in the story? How about Antônio Bokel, Daniel Murgel, Júlio Callado, Luíza Baldan, and Gustavo Speridião? They were not part of Posição 2004.
- Well, I liked the small photo of Bokel's painting. I'm not sure I've seen his work before, but he seems to be all over the painting, trying to make it scream, and I like that punch! Daniel Murgel I know from Pyrata, a group show organised by Grupo Py on the Rio-Niterói ferryboat. He did a performance called The Curator, in which he went around freaking out and giving orders, and making sardonic comments on us artists. Great show! Callado's photo hit me as subtle despair, as you can't see where the the roads go, like they go nowhere. And then it feels peaceful. I like the unclear message thing! Baldan's photo was good because I don't understand what it is about the greens a blues of it that just got me mesmerized. I also can't understand the place where she took it, which adds to the spacey effect. Very good! And Speridião's cover graffitti was fantastic!
Calling a brick shape a cloud! Twelve lines, a word, a dot. Total Punk Rock Artcore!
-OK. Back to Posição 2004. Daniel Toledo.
- His Homem Espelho means Mirror Man, and is a heavy suit that covers his face, too, like a space suit made of broken glass! He just goes around smashing the world without any actual act of violence! It's a carnival of fragments! It's creepy and freaky and I love it!
- Joana Csekö?
- She did this triangular pile of POP washing machine soap. It was almost smashed to pieces at the opening night, because of the enormous crowd trying to walk around it. It was saved somehow, and rebuilt the next day, so it stayed on the show. She called it Persistent Organic Polluter, or something, and I really liked it. My notes don't go that far, because I was taking them while we were at Gê's place, during an éramos 3 meeting. I could not concentrate, and started taking notes from the forms that the artists filled for us to organise the space inside the show. I suppose Gê still have them projects. I went as far as letter D. Anyway, the POP triangular pile was one big slab of political art fun, thank you very much!
- Guga Ferraz?
- That guy is great! He was selling cleaning cloths, like the one's janitors and maids use to wipe the floor here in Brazil. They were white and had the face of George W. Bush silk-screened to it. I just love his sense of humor! I'm sure President Bush can tolerate this, for he believes in democracy.
- Bernardo Pinheiro?
- He did this excellent video-installation, that left some people quite disturbed. If you are sensitive about images of eyes, I would not advise going inside. If you like Un Chien Andalou, then it's pretty much nice clean fun. I watched it several times, for it was short enough, and sharp fun, for sure!
- Are you upset that Revista do Globo never once mentions Posição 2004?
- Oh, they will mention it soon enough. Just wait and see.

Another moronic idea in Amsterdam

- You did what?
- I ate like one gram of hash, and went back to my hotel, to watch some TV. I was feeling so relaxed, I thought I would stop breathing as soon as I closed my eyes and went to sleep. The visual effects on the videos felt unreal, like I was really hallucinating. I found out later they were IN the videos, not in my mind. Eventually, I realised the idea of stopping breathing was ridiculous, and told myself to relax and sleep. My death was the worse that could happen. So I slept in total bliss.

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 35)

- Posição 2004. You found the aftermath notes. Let's hear it!
- OK. Adriana Heemann: Densidades.
- Translation?
- Densities. That's the title of those drawings I mentioned. The black and white ones. Gutsy! Nice!
- Right. Next?
- Adriano Melhem: Rubinho e Força Bruta. He is listed as Adriano on the flyer, and the name refers to the band he painted expressionistic portraits of.
- Right. Next?
- Alberto Saraiva: Organismo de Vigília: vigiar é sonhar, sonhar é vigiar.
- The one with the surveillance cameras for breakfast, right?
- Yeah. The title means Surveillance Organism, and also Awakened (as opposed to Asleep) Organism. The subtitle means: to keep watch (as a sentinel) is to dream, and to dream is to keep watch. Nice going!
- Right. Next?
- Alexandre Ferreira: Pro-Labore. That means the money you receive to help pay for the work you're exhibiting, once you are selected for some art show. The money box, remember? Sharp!
- Right. Next?
- Alexandre Sá: Instalativa 1.6, which translates as: Installative1.6. The one with the empty metal frames and the leaflets and hammers.
- Right. Next?
- Alice Miceli: 88 de 14.000, which means 88 out of 14.000. This one was a video on a TV on a short pedestal, with a place for you to sit down and watch, and it was situated at the end of the basement's hallway. It was a fusion of an image that looked like an up-close shot of the asphalt road passing along a moving automobile, with mug-shots of political prisioners from somewhere in the Far East or something. It was rather peaceful, like a silent Requiem Mass. The moving image Missa pro defunctis for the forgotten human beings. Really good!

skullfucker

- In the eye of the skull?
- Yeah! I got some rubber cushion works inside to make it comfy for my dick to move around! It's nice!
- Rubber cushions? You nancy boy!
- Nah! You're just saying that to woo me into taking off my panties!

- Adapop: art group, band, movie, book, website, game, and everything else!
- Right on! And I'm your first transgender groupie!
- As long as it doesn't interfere with our open marriage!
- Oh, you're just the best cuckold in the universe for a boy like me!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 34)

- Good news about Posição 2004! I found some notes I made, that probably date back to a few weeks after the art show, and might help make my memory clearer!
- Let's hear it, then!
- I forgot them back home! But I believe I read that Ana Paula Andrade did some glue and paint plastic object wall objects or something! My notes are very laconic, I'm a bit sorry to say. I truly hope we can get more info somewhere else. Anyway, they were small colorful wall objects. They were made with white glue and acrylic paint, and didn't need anything else, for me, because they were beautiful, and different, and SEEMED SO EASY TO MAKE! Like the New Wave Punk Rock explosion, they seemed to say: YOU TOO CAN HAVE THIS MUCH FUN! I loved it!

plain english

Because I live in a democracy, I am against dictatorships, and a strong critic of the government, and will always be, except if I come to live in a dictatorship myself, in which case I will keep my mouth shut, like a good citizen. I will even say that I live in a democracy, if I'm told to do so.

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 33)

The following excerpt (in portuguese, as in the original) was deemed free of any hidden terrorist codes. The removal of operatives Green and Orange seems to have been a coincidence. We have as yet no proof that any of the underground cells we are investigating were aware of their activities. Feel free to ask for more details on their messages. Here's the transcript of the aforementioned excerpt:

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 32)

- Posição 2004: Ana Torres.
- Well, I din't see it all, only the postcard photos. I understand there were also paper poster billboards in the city. So it was like her work was the bigger fractal image of the art show. Not that it was about the show. I understand the billboards were bigger pictures on the same series. Maybe the same pictures on the postcards. I remember liking the photos, and I certainly loved the idea. What I really remember clearly is the idea. I don't mean the idea or ideas she was trying to convey. I don't know what they were. I mean the idea of showing the images just that way. Great!
- So that's another one you don't understand but like anyway.
- I think she told me once, and I just smiled like I understood what she was saying. Maybe some day I will understand what she meant, but that won't stop me from understand it my own way right now, and enjoying myself in doing so!
- So tell us more about your understanding of it.
- Well, it just calls your attention to the media she was using. It's like making a movie about making a movie. I guess it's never been done quite like she did it. And even if it turns out to be not that new an idea, I'm fine with it. I sure had fun making contact with that specific piece of art, and that is also very important in contemporary art, for me.

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 31)

- Posição 2004: Ana Holck.
- One of her best works! Because the walls were close together, the black adhesive plastic was quite at its limit of tension. Two black rectangles facing each other on the walls. Two longer black rectangles facing each other in the air! That means an air brick drawn with black adhesive plastic. I think she sees it as painting in the air. I like the idea, and specially this resulting installation.

Excerpt: we have concluded that the phrase O MEU TRABALHO DÁ DIREITO A UM ADICIONAL DE INSANIDADE is NOT a coded order for a terrorist cell. The guy's job IS driving him a little nuttier than his usual.

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 30)

- Posição 2004: Alexandre Vogler.
- OK. He did this joke drawing called ME AND THE GREAT MASTERS OF ART, or something like that, which was basically this empty paper with the logo for this newspaper stand collection of books about painters, you know? You buy them every week and get them bound afterwards. Anyway, there was this empty space on one side of the drawing, and just the logo on the right side. I guess the empty space meant he is not as famous with the tabloid crowd, and maybe even that he doesn't care for fame that much, either. A bit like visual noise laughing at it all. Nice going!
- Amália Giacomini.
- Great! She did this piece with white elastic lines drawing a grid well above the pool, like the inner patio was some cosmic greenhouse. And then there was this line coming down to touch one of the edges of the pool. It was this visual background drone music, that kept resurfacing into your field of vision. Good show!

net value

- So I get to have lots of careless sexual pleasures when I get to Paradise?
- Yeah! And free access to the whole internet!

Different kind of heaven

There's nothing like pissing on a corpse that you have just fucked the remaining blood out of.

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 29)

- Posição 2004: Alexandre Sá.
- He did this installation that included nails and hammers and empty metal frames and texts written on the wall and pamphlets, and I remember one day he was going around the show with this rubber stamp, asking people to let him stamp them on their arms, and I agreed to be stamped, but asked for it to be on the fabric of my cotton jacket. I don't know what his work was about, but I guess it was something about art imploding itself with self-references, and he looked like he really meant it, so that's thumbs up for him, in my humble opinion!

nazi panthers want their mommies

This drawing shows a hitler-like white man with a huge black power hairdo, doing the nazi salute, with a speech balloon that reads "MOMMIE!"

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 28)

- Posição 2004: Alexandre Ferreira.
- Right. He did one funny piece that was a small wooden box with loads of fake money. I can't recall if it was Monopoly money. I think it looked like miniature brazilian money. Maybe I'm an absent-minded patron, but I think the main thing was showing people the money at a high art exhibition, you know? Like Andy Warhol is dead for years now, and people still can't face the fact that art is about money, too, because it is about every single bit of real life and the fantasies that go with it! I think he was just reminding all of us that we are material people in a material planet. For my money, that's a fine piece of art!

Say the word that sets you free

- Which word?
- Find yours! Everybody's got to find it alone, you know!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 27)

- Tell us about Gabriela Noujaim's work at Posição 2004.
- A beautiful aggressive installation of gesso on the floor with broken glass pointing up and red roses over the broken glass, like some gourgeous floating wounds. Kind of gives you shivers. Very good!
- What about Adriano?
- He did some quite expressive painted portraits of Rubinho e Força Bruta, a band I didn't know about at the time. Well, in fact, I still haven't heard their first album. But the painting looked like portraits of personal friends, and since the album was not out back then, it was perhaps quite daring to just forget about direct politics and aesthetical questions and just painting what he wanted to paint, even if it would leave the viewers puzzled. It certainly felt like that to me. And I like it. Maybe it sounds too much like the egomaniac side of Transvanguarda, but I don't care. I like the paintings, period.
- And what about Alberto Saraiva?
- Oh, he did a very good installation of a breakfast table with small surveillance cameras and monitors mixed into the empty, pristine clean tableware. It reminds me of that story that says that Warhol suggested to Lou Reed that he should write a song about paranoia, which was supposed to be the subject most in touch with the cultural climate of the sixties, the way Warhol saw it. That's supposedly how the Velvet Underground got to record Sunday Morning. Anyway, I think Alberto Saraiva turned collective paranoia into a thing of beauty. Good show!

You WILL sleep

'Cause we know that where there's fanny
He'll be there!
He'll be there! On the sea! On the land! In the Ass!
Believe me: sleeping happens all the time, and it's been going on for ages. It's quite possible that someone has slept some time in the past right where you're seated! Lot's of people are sleeping somewhere in this world right now! And there's nothing you can do about it! They are having sweet dreams! Yes! They are neither working nor worried sick! Oh, I know that millions are killing themselves with lack of sleep and overactivity! Yes, it is a nice vibe all over the planet, all this restlessness! Give them candy, coffee, tobacco, amphetamines right up the neck's veins! It is no use: sooner or later they will sleep! Maybe forever, but they will. And so will you! You cannot stop this for your life! OK, maybe there are a couple of monks out there who can feed on sunlight and live for 5000 years, and never sleep. Maybe you are one of them! Maybe you don't miss it at all! You are immortal, and you don't know what food is for some ten thousand years, and you don't need sleeping either, for life feels like a dream already! People are strange and amusing to you! Even though you can remember every single thing, you are not bored at all! But then, maybe you will want to wake up someday! And you will hear a voice in your head, that sounds familiar (but you cannot place it!), and it will tell you to just close your eyes and let yourself AWAKE.

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 26)

- Tell us about the work of Adriana Heemann at Posição 2004!
- I don't know, man! I think I'll have to ask Gê to give me their projects, so I can refresh my memory! I think what she did was a group of black and white drawings that were shown in the basement. They were small and pretty intense. Not figurative, but black shapes that just looked at you right in the face. Maybe they were done with black paint over some thick white paper. I just remember the feeling of something ominous about those black shapes! Like some droning Noise Rock thing. Eerie and neat.

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 25)

- Tell us about Cleantho Viana at Posição 2004.
- His work was fun like a terror movie. It was outside, under one of the open-air verandas. It was a greysh white carcass made of bamboo or something. It looked like a human-shaped phanthom lying on the floor, with snakes or giant worms coming out of it. As you came closer, you noticed the snakes were like vertebral columns made of light brown wood. Bamboo, I was told. He does this green-friendly bamboo stuff, aside from photos and videos and other things. Anyway, it was weird fun awaiting you as you approached the building to enter the art show. It was far enough to scare you for a split second. Then you realised it was not moving, so you felt safe enough to check it out. He used the perfect spot for it.

explained at last

The real reason is not money. People get jobs so they can tell their Mom and/or Dad that, even though they are loving the conversation, they must be off to work.

Baseball bat effect

- Some angry fans might come after you with baseball bats after that last post!
- But I love the Ramones! Their fans should be able to take a joke! If not, they'd better bring their firearms and know how to use them things! Just in case!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 24)

- What about Aimberê Cesar at Posição 2004?
- He was the Master Without Ceremony of TV Zona, which translates as Chaos or Mess TV. That was one of the collective performances inside the empty pool that was occupied by bobN and his guests. I've read about his Zen-Nudism philosophy and thought it very progressive. And I've seen some of his works elsewhere, and liked them a lot. As for that specific day in the pool, all I can remember is mixed images. I believe they held a pic-nic breakfast, but maybe I'm just confused about the groups and days. People were selling art objects and doing poetry shows and performances. Maybe it's not new, but it certainly felt like they were being true to themselves. Like the performances were just a little exaggeration of their perceived true selves.

I swear I saw her underpants

- It was just a split second of this mad latina dancer show in the middle of DOWN ARGENTINE WAY, but I swear I saw her panties!
- I'm sure you did! Don't worry: it's just Hollywood's way of checking if you're really paying attention to the movie! Like a wake-up call!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 23)

- Tell us about Márcio Botner and Pedro Agilson at Posição 2004.
- That was another great one! As you went upstairs to enter the building and see the art show, you saw this naked female ass facing you. There was this naked woman on a short plain white round pedestal facing another pedestal with a computer monitor. The monitor, if I remember it well, showed a video loop of a camera doing a close-up of Botner, with the camera going around his head, so you could see him the same way you could face the model's face from various angles, for there was enough space between the pedestals for people to wander. She was a very brave lady, standing there naked in front of a huge crowd, staring mostly at her "twin" moving electronic image. I mean: some 3 thousand people passed through the entrance and saw her that night! Later, Botner draw a line around her feet, to sort of mark where she stood, and the pedestal was empty for the remaining days of the show. Now, I can't say I know what Botner and Agilson meant with this piece. But it was remarkable in its stark and simple arrangement. And I liked her brown hair and short haircut very much, and found her ass quite beautiful.

Grindhouse scandal

- Jeovah fuck! Look at this! This new movie, GRINDHOUSE, is supposed to be made of two films and four fake trailers, like a grindhouse double feature. Now I hear they are going to show the movies separately in most countries outside the United States! Let an army of day-glo pink well-hung Krishnas come down from Heaven and fuck their dead in the ass! People should have at least the chance to choose the version they want to see! But no, they won't give them any chance at choosing! And then they will get pissed when the young crackers steal their movie and show it for free all over the web, in its unadultered version! Nice business strategy, guys! This is surely gonna land you a box office hit!
- Maybe some of their dead actually like it in the ass! It's pretty nice, if the man or woman giving it to you really knows how to do it!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 22)

- And what did Claudio Montagna show at Posição 2004?
- This big collage picture of a headless naked man. Life-size, if I remember it well. It was all made of pieces of small color pictures of corresponding body parts. Small feet forming the feet, small legs forming the legs, and so on. And the crotch part was this beautiful chaotic round mandala of penises. I loved it!

Rio name game

- What were the names on the blisters you you saw lying on the side street?
- The morphine sulphate 30 mg was called Dimorf. The 5 mg laxative I could not read clearly, but I believe it was Lactopurga, or something like that.

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 21)

- What did Bernardo Damasceno show at Posição 2004?
- A miniature green park bench, like the ones they have in Lage Park. Made of painted matches, standing on a plain white pedestal. He called it UM BOM LUGAR. That means A GOOD PLACE. I think he was trying to make us pay attention to the bigger picture. There was the art show happening in and around the bulding, and then there was the larger circle of the park itself, like a beautiful sensorial background engulfing it all.

bad junkie and good junkie

At the side street today, I saw this: an empty blister pack for 30 mg tablets. 10 tablets total. Morphine sulphate. And then I saw another one. This time a sixer blister for what looked like 5mg doses of a common laxative. I wrote it down while kneeled in broad daylight. It was early and deserted. Now they are gone. The rest of the litter remains. So maybe someone saw me. Maybe it was just someone with cancer. Maybe some nice junkie. If it was a bad junkie, I'm glad I got this written in here. I love Rio in the Fall.

This comment DEFINITELY contains SPOILERS

I liked CAIXA DOIS even more because, in the end, the guys that were not the ones who started the money laundering or whatever it was, the poor ones, they got the millions. It is a movie, so there's no need to make them absolutely honest heroes. And I liked MEET THE ROBINSONS even more, because i just love this freaky joyful sexless workaholic stuff that some american movies sell! If you are in a kinky mood, you can always tell yourself that they are all closet fetishists. You can even imagine they are out there having some deliciously weird sex in some alternative universe version of the movie! Just don't tell me anything unless I ask you! In fact, don't even talk, unless you're spoken to! Do you understand? Good!

KILL ALL DICTATORS

- You must remember that the right to life is a human right.
- OK, so lock up all dictators for the rest of their lives! If you think that's more humane than facing the firing squad, so be it!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 20)

- What about André Makarenko's work at Posição 2004?
- This one I watched quite a few times! I can't say I understand it, but I loved some of the images! And the colors! I don't care if it has been done before! And even if you prove it to me that his politics are clearly stated and highly questionable, it was a fun time watching his couple of strange collages of images! I mean: I hate nazism! But I can appreciate the genius of propaganda movies like Triumph of the Will and Olympia!
- You think Makarenko is a nazi?
- No, I don't think he's a nazi! I'm just saying that, if I ever find out some totalitarian inclinations in him, I still will remember those videos as fun!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 18)

- What about Pedro França in Posição 2004?
- Well, I hope he has got some pictures of his installation, man! There was at least one that ended up in Jornal do Brasil the next friday. He got this room in the basement, with raw concrete serving as a floor, if I remember it well. What he did was building this shady ambient with an old and small round table, two chairs, and an old teapot, and two teacups. It was all empty, like some darkened stage or time warp you just stepped into without any warning. And then it felt funny, like you were backstage to the art show. Kind of puzzling and warm. Whatever it was, I liked the feeling.

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 17)

- Tell us about what Tatiana Blass showed at the Posição 2004 art show!
- I remember the paintings looked very tasty! And I think one of them bled into the wall as colored adhesive plastic! We call it contact paper in Brazil, because of a brand called Con-tact. Anyway, I simply loved the colors and shapes! Like some dreamy abstractions. And they were small canvasses! That impressed me very much in a quite favorable way! I was very pleased!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 16)

- What about the Suzana Queiroga show, at the nearby Cavalariças, inside Lage Park? How do you relate it to the Posição 2004 art show?
- A beautiful counterpoint! In fact, it was so beautiful I wanted to eat her art! I like it when an art object does this to me, you know? Gives me this nonsensical hunger for beatifully processed minerals!

happy go lucky!

- Your book "Capitalist, YEAH!" ["Capitalista, sim!" in portuguese] looks pretty much like the work of a closet liberal, when it ends up saying that human lives are our most valuable capital.
- Well, I was dancing drunk inside this gay-friendly nightclub in Rio, when I saw this guy with a T-shirt that had that famous Che Guevara face, but with the red star replaced by those golden arches that fast-food lovers from all over the planet recognize instantly. I had to laugh and comment, and he said he liked the scandal it provoked on liberals, and I ended up saying something like: if not capitalist, forget it! Then I went home to get some absurd amount of coffee in my brain, and wrote the book in a few freaked out days of pure bliss! Anyway, my next book will be called ASSASSINATO SEGUIDO DE ESTUPRO, which means HOMICIDE FOLLOWED BY RAPE, and will be just as happy go lucky!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 15)

- What can you tell us about Heleno Bernardi's work at Posição 2004?
- I liked it a lot, this big photograph of a head that looked like it had lost its skin and eyes and was nothing more than pink and red chaos. I think he used bubblegum. Anyway, it had that mixed feeling of horror and fun to it!

beautiful red shoes

- I'm gonna kill myself!

Well, I understand this guy John Locke said
That if the Government steals your bread
And tries to make you a slave to the Crown

In other words: I'm too drunk to care!
Yeah!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 14)

- Please try and tell us what you do remember about your éramos 3 group show inside the Posição 2004 group show!
- OK. Ana Sarmento did this picture of two or three wine glasses over a white tablecloth. I believe one of them was broken, and the red wine was spilled. It just hit my soul, man, the way she did it. Maybe it was too subtle for others, and even for herself to notice what she had accomplished. But it really did it for me! As for Cristina Amiran, that was lots of fun to help her by being the models for her photos, and the final wall objects with the photos were probably the most successful in doing the BRIDGE thing that was supposed to link our individual works. They were also yummy, and I love the chaos math analogy! Gê Pinheiro did this floor installation with these monochrome beige small children figures that are used by catholic believers to thank the saints for saving their children's lives. She made them flock up into this wall, except for one or two that looked the other way, like they were awakening from the collective conformity trance or something. I think her work was the best when you think about straight up communication with the general public, and that's a certain plus with me! And Khalil did this kind of manifesto that he ended up typing into this bakery paper that is used in Brazil to wrap that french bread, you know? Just go to any bakery and you will find it! it is also used to wrap ham, cheese, and stuff like that, once you slice them up and wrap 'em in plastic, so it is like the outer face of what is really basic survival inside. I think Khalil really hit the nail in the head, if you can open your mind to the war situation I've already mentioned, you know? It is really about the survival both of our collective and individual minds during a planet-wide war! I'm not being dramatic, just pointing it out! I am sure the next generations won't let us use this war thing as an excuse for anything, and that's fine with me!

Groovy, baby!

Dear Agent Green,
I'm kind of concerned about my act. Doing coke traffic and sniffing with the guys is getting to be too much fun for me! Motherfuckwhore turned out to be a club that I was taken to while blindfolded, and it is way out fun! Like people are getting REALLY stoned and all! - Tell us some more about Silvia D and her Funk C drawing!
- No way! YOU go and find her online or something! Maybe I'm a deluded fool, but I don't think she wants that much publicity!
- What about Gustavo Prado?
- Man, I don't pretend that I know what he meant! I just enjoyed the environment he built! I just went there over and over to enjoy its pure sensorial impact on me! You just go to Rio's MAM and ask Franz Manata to give you his phone number! And, while you're at it, ask Franz about his piece at the show! It was right at the entrance of Posição 2004! It looked just like one of those airport metal detectors, but it had a blinking red-letter sign over the passage that looked like it spelled EXIT, but in fact it says EXST! Now, THAT'S some great stuff, man! Subtle and in-your-face at the same time! Just ask for a silent minute to look at the pictures of it, before he tells you all about it! Let the silence of the photos hit your mind!

- What about the rumours that some video equipment were stolen at the last day of Posição 2004, at an hour when there were fewer people visiting the show?
- There is no police record of this.

What MANOCROMO means

Dear Agent Green,
MANO means brother, and is used by black people in São Paulo and elsewhere, as black people in the United States use the words MAN, BROTHER, or NIGGA. MONOCROMO means monochrome. So, MANOCROMO is MANO+MONOCROMO. It is supposed to be an ironic protest against racist black people, as well as against the oppression that black people suffer. I believe the artist is just another harmless pacifist cry-baby drunkard. The idea is nice, but too subtle, in my opinion. Anyway, he seems to be on our side, favoring capitalism with a human face. Not a target.
Kind regards,
Agent Orange

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 9)

- We understand that, during Posição 2004, a teacher was told by one of the artists to fuck off, when she complained about a man selling beer inside the empty pool.
- I've heard that one. Didn't see it happen, though. It was not bobN, but one of his guests. I'm not naming the guy, but I noticed how drunk he was, and I believe it did happen. That was not nice of him, but I understand wartime art can get pretty edgy. I am glad the teacher did not respond by punching his nose in.
- Aren't you taking too far this World Trade War thing? I mean, Brazilian troops are nowhere near Iraq! And there's been no terrorist attacks inside Brazilian territory!
- Well, this war is planet wide, man! Of course I know things are much hairier in Iraq and some other places! But I believe terrorist bombings could happen in Brazil! We have poor people with little hope for the future! And we have fundamentalism! Don't forget that some Brazilians really believed, back in the nineteen-sixties, that they could start a civil war, overthrow the Military Dictatorship, and build a Communist Dictatorship! Yeah, right! Like it was feasible, and would make a GREAT difference to change FROM ONE CRAP TO ANOTHER! Stupid ideas translate into stupid action here, in the Land of the Samba, too, you know? I just hope we are getting too smart for that kind of shit! But things COULD become much weirder in Brazil, believe me! I'm sorry to say that, but it really doesn't seem too far-fetched! I just pray that the over-optimistic are proven right!

miniature swamp

After a series of orgasms, I had to stop, because I felt a pressure from inside my ass. Even before I took the dildo out, I was farting out some huge amount of air that I had just put inside my bowels with my bobbing up and down. It didn't smell, and I don't know why. Then I went potty in my hand, as I took the dildo out while sitting on the toilet. It was some strange warm sticky feeling betweem my hand and ass. I looked at the stuff, which, sure enough, looked and felt like warm chocolate. But the smell would fool no one! So I put my hand down the toilet and flushed away. The water went brown like a miniature swamp.

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 8)

- We understand that some people were on the verge of starting a fight during the Orquestra Galaxi show, at the last day of Posição 2004.
- Yeah, I guess some people were upset because they were too loud, and the music was quite chaotic! A girl I won't name said it was Zoo Jazz, you know? Playing like mindless animals! I think they were just banging away, like fuck-all, which is great fun, but can be very annoying for most people! I liked it, but, on the same style, I think the Velvet Underground did a better job with European Son. Anyway, bobN used the empty pool to show some of his art, and invited different artists to use the space each day, during Posição 2004. So I guess the whole thing was supposed to be some sort of fringe art invasion, and I am happy to say that no bones were broken, and no one died! And no one had to worry about the police, for it all happened at an earlier hour, and there was no breaking of silence laws, either!
- So, are you buying any of their albums?
- I don't know that they have any! But, if they do, I would try to listen to it!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 7)

- Well, Marcelo, this Posição 2004 art show looks like an attempt to ressurect Dadaism!
- Oh! I see. That would be fine with me, except for the fact that Dadaism is not dead! Art movements don't die! They simply change names and addresses, or fall asleep for some years! Even Dadaism was really Nonsense with a new name and some different intentions. We could say we were some sort of dadaists for the War on Terrorism, but I doubt some of the artists involved at Posição 2004 would buy that label. Then again, we could say that NOT BUYING the idea is BEING PART OF IT, TOO, just like some dadaist from 1916 would say! And also: I suppose we were also hoping to make some money! You see, we are very optimistic, most of us!
- I should think this self-mocking would not be bought by every artist that was there, either!
- Right! But Brazil is a free country, and they are free to hate my jokes, as long as they do it in a peaceful way!

Ice cream cum

I understand Rio is supposed to be very violent nowadays, but I am not about to give you an answer to that problem, and not having an answer makes me go out and drink an DANCE ME HEAD OFF!
I was drunk. Wasn't really hitting on her. Just talking away with anyone, really! OK, there was a couple of guys, and maybe one or two girls there that I would snog. I ended up with a quick kiss from this friend. By then, I think she understood and set off to get some other guy to nail her. My friend also danced while hugging me for a few minutes. I think I would have liked some more kissing, but the music was so good, I was feeling pretty fine later on at the nearest open bakery.
I fell asleep unwashed, then woke up in a hurry to go get some stuff done outside, without shades, A GREAT BIG SUNNY SATURDAY MORNING IN RIO, and I'm not complaining: I like the sun, as long as I can get some fresh air at the nearest shopping center. I had lunch with this couple I know, and fell asleep at their sofa, as they were getting dressed for some social occasion. They gave me a ride home on their way to a less lunatic party. May the Gods give you a long and happy life!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 6)

- How do you guys from éramos 3 group situate the Posição 2004 art show in terms of contemporary art theory?
- Once again: this here is Marcelo, and I can't pretend to represent I speak for the group! They might have a different opinion! I myself think it of it as a collective action started by us, that got way out of hand, but was protected by the gods or something! Some people were quite out of their minds at various moments, and we are lucky that no one was hurt!
- Can you be more specific?
- Not about the altered states! No names, please!
- About the collective action, then! Isn't this to much of an old and dead thing from the sixties or seventies?
- Sure! This is not 1965! But we have to deal with the ghosts of Warhol, Beuys, Oiticica and others! And the shadows of Bridget Riley, Gunther von Hagens, Romero Britto, Chris Burden, and Jeff Koons! I think we did a pretty good job of taking the opportunity we had, and used the space of Lage Park Art School to a very good effect! Then again: what will survive, except for some individual works, will be the memories of the event itself! For those who were open to it, I am sure it was a rush of fresh air! A dance of hearts and minds!
- What individual works?
- Well, my favorites were Gustavo Prado's fluorescent light installation downstairs, and this wildly humorous drawing called "Funk C", or something like that, by Silvia D, you know? The one with the masochistic viet cong! Talk about chutzpah!

- Have you seen the photos of Britney Spears with her head shaved?
- Yeah, but that's too hot for me to watch!

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 5)

- Can you tell us why the art show was called POSIÇÃO 2004? Was this supposed to be some collective political stance?
- Well, I believe the original idea of us from éramos 3 was that the show should be as aesthetically varied as possible, like a map of all tendencies at the year 2004! So that's why we called it what would be translated as POSITION 2004! Like saying: this is where we are TODAY! As it evolved, it turned out to be a curator-free show, where the artists themselves chose what they were showing! I don't think there was any unified political view! We were just hoping that expressing ourselves would help the planet, I guess, but even that is not completely certain! I can't swear every single artist was optimistic! I'm sure I was and still am! The way I see it, we were trying to make some sense of a world gone mad! We can't ignore the fact that we were at the beginning of the World Trade War that started with the 9/11 terrorist attacks! It's almost 3 years later, and public opinion seems to have changed, specially in the United States! Back in 2004, it was like: WHAT'S GOING ON? WHAT CAN WE DO? Well, in my humble opinion, we did what Keith Richards once said was all the Rolling Stones could do: Keep on rockin' and hope for the best! I believe it was the Disco Era when he said that! Maybe we are still trying to get out of that crazy oil crisis, you know? I hope we don't destroy the human race in the process of trying to save the planet! Anyway, whatever happens next, I sure hope you are having some fun at least fifteen minutes every day, man! In the end, it might well be all you have, except for your inner core of hope!

time to have fun

death might come in a flash, my friend
it don't matter if you're old or young
you won't have any time to repent
for not taking any time to have fun

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 4)

- Please state your name and your part in the art show POSIÇÃO 2004!
- My name is Marcelo Moraes, and I did the upside down casserole with a pink handle! It's called BRIDGE, because each one of us at éramos 3 group was supposed to do something called BRIDGE! That would be a bridge between our works, as we were the bridge between the artists and the Lage Park School! So yes, I was also one of the guys and girls organizing the thing! And also, I can't swear I know what I am talking about! You can go to Lage Park School's website and check the photo of my object! It is easy to find it, for the pink handle really pops at you! As for the explanation of our work, you better check with them others! Mine started with the pink handle against the silver of the casserole, and was meant to be unusual! Hope you have fun! I sure did! Those five days were some of the best in my life!

what pica jumencial means

Dear Agent Green,
My research on PICA JUMENCIAL indicates it could be translated as DONKEYISH DICK. That expression would mean a very big penis.
That's all for now,
Agent Orange

Generation 2000 against total chaos (part 3)

- OK, when was that Posição 2004?
- The freakening night was the 14th of july, 2004!
- Freakening night?
- Yeah, that was a FREAK OUT OPENING NIGHT, man! Not its official name or intention, but I hear the Director of Lage Park Art School had to scream to get heard when he was forced to intervene and tell the people to turn the damn sound way down or else the Military Club Hotel across the street would see it that the police would do it! I was already home, but I was told that it was turning into a mad drumming happening or something! People were on the verge of channeling spirits or whatever! Fucking crazy, man!
